Biography:
Douglas Alan James, 36, one of the region's and the nation's longest- surviving persons with HIV infection, died Tuesday at Betak Hospice in Mount Airy. Mr. James was diagnosed in 1982 with the then-new illness. He continued to lead an active life until February 1991, when illness forced him to retire. Born in Long Island, Mr. James arrived here in the early 1970s to attend nursing school.
