Countryman, 50, a charismatic Midwesterner who came to Philadelphia in the 1960s to lead in the struggle for civil rights and against racism, poverty and ignorance, died Thursday in Lafayette, Ind. He died of complications attributable to AIDS, according to family and friends. His family said Mr. Countryman had been an IV drug user.
