THOMAS, 45, INTERIOR DESIGNER, ACTIVIST]]

Frederick C. Thomas, 45, a locally prominent interior designer, died of complications from AIDS Thursday night at Pennsylvania Hospital. A native of Shelbyville, Indiana where his family owned nurseries, he moved to Philadelphia in his twenties. As a designer, Mr. Thomas initially worked for other firms. During the last ten years he worked independently, out of his stylish apartment. "He did residential work, and for some of the most prominent families," said a friend, Laurence Manou. "He had a very keen eye, consummate good taste, and insisted on high quality." Published on 1990-02-03, Page C09, Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA)

In addition to his professional work, Frederick was a serious activist, having helped to found ActionAIDS in the mid-eighties. He established

that organization's development department, served on its board for many years, guided its move from a church hallway to fully-equipped offices for an enlarged staff and organized its most successful fundraising events and projects. Frederick's board participation was marked by humor,

sarcasm and common sense. He brought a Midwestern sensibility to proceedings.

After his illness confined him to his home in late 1989, Thomas became the first recorded client of MANNA (Metropolitan AIDS Neighborhood Nutrition Alliance), and made it known when the quality or nature of the delivered meals were not up to his standards. His memorial service and reception at the Church of St Luke and the Epiphany was attended by hundreds of family, friends, and colleagues and featured elaborate

floral arrangements, recorded and live brass music, and great tributes from his closest friends.
Norman Baker HIV/AIDS activist 58

by Jen Colletta

Norman Baker, a longtime HIV/AIDS activist who volunteered for several local HIV/AIDS organizations, died Jan. 6 at age 58.

Baker was a former resident of Coatesville, and had been living at Keystone Hospice House in Wyndmoor at the time of his death.

A 1969 graduate of Coatesville High School, he was involved throughout the 1990s in numerous HIV/AIDS organizations in the area, serving as the president of the Philadelphia AIDS Advocacy Coalition and lending his talents to such groups as ActionAIDS and Philadelphia FIGHT.

Jane Shull, executive director of FIGHT, said Baker’s tenacity made him an exemplary advocate for the local HIV/AIDS community.

“Norman knew a lot about advocacy,” Shull said. “He respected no boundaries and would just call anyone — he’d call the governor. And that attitude got people to talk to him and he was able to really influence people.”

Michael Marsico, who met Baker nearly 20 years ago, said Baker was open to bringing the community’s concerns to a wide range of city officials, such as those in the school district or police department who were not always initially supportive.

“One thing I always liked about working with Norm was that there’s often this group mentality, but Norm would always want to reach across and actually talk to folks on the other side of the issues,” Marsico said. “He’d be willing to have conversations with them and would show up with his homework done, and that’s how he got things done.”

In 1991, Baker served on a committee that reviewed the feasibility of a condom-availability program in the Philadelphia school district and, along with other members of HIV/AIDS activist group ACT-UP, presented then-Superintendent Constance Clayton with a “report card” on her implementation of the program. He participated in numerous ACT-UP demonstrations, pressing for increased education and funding for HIV/AIDS issues, and was arrested at a 1992 protest in Harrisburg after pouring red dye into the Capitol fountain.

“He was a very, very important presence in the early days,” said Nan Feyler, chief of staff to the city’s health commissioner and former executive director of the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania. “He definitely gave a lot of his time and energy to the community.”

In addition to his HIV/AIDS and LGBT work on behalf of the Human Rights Campaign, Baker was a tireless mental-health and disabilities advocate and sat on the Philadelphia Mental Retardation Public-Awareness Committee and the governmental-affairs committee of disability agency The Association for Retarded Citizens of Pennsylvania.

He was also a longtime supporter of Gov. Rendell, having worked on his campaigns for district attorney, mayor of Philadelphia and governor and was a member of the committee for his 2003 gubernatorial inauguration.

Baker was predeceased by his father Norman and is survived by his mother Alberta, sisters Paulette Nicholas and Beth Ewing and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 9 and Baker was buried at All Souls Cemetery in West Brandywine.

Norman Baker, a long time mental health and disabilities advocate, passed away January 6, 2010 at age 58. I first met Norman in 2003 when we both served on the Human Rights Campaign’s Philadelphia Steering Committee. Norman was a man of great passion who put his all into every task he decided to undertake. Throughout the 1990’s, Norman was one the front lines of HIV/AIDS activism. He was the “Man in the Arena” who would not take no for an answer. A longtime supporter of Gov. Ed Rendell, Norman would think nothing of calling the governor on the phone whenever he disagreed with his policy. More than that, Norman was a friend.

This month marks the six month anniversary of his death and I still find myself thinking of him almost every day. Norman was a special man in that he walked tall with integrity and didn’t care what other people thought about him. As a gay man and devout Catholic, Norman was, in many ways, a walking contradiction. He was very proud of his Catholic identity in a time where Catholic doctrine condemned those who were not heterosexual along with those whose gender identity did not conform with society’s preconceived definition of what a man or woman should be. When I asked how he reconciled being a devout Catholic and an openly gay man, he nonchalantly replied, “Who cares?” and continued to explain how they were both part of his identity and it shouldn’t matter to anyone else.

Norman was a close friend of mine despite our 25+ year age difference. He would share his wisdom with me every chance he could. The last time I saw Norman, he called me up on a Saturday morning in July 2009 and said, “Kevin, I want to do a day trip to Ocean City, NJ and you’re going with me. I’ll be there in a few minutes.” he wasn’t asking me. He was telling me. Luckily, I didn’t have any plans that day.

In the car ride, we caught each other up on what was going on with our lives and offered each other advice on the men we were dating or were interested in. Norman always had a way of making me feel special and letting me know that I shouldn’t take any shit from anyone because I was worth more than that — something that I am still trying to accept in myself.

When we got to the beach, I bought us both beach tags for the day and we went to sit on the crowded beach. He laughed as I used my Blackberry to check out/take photos of hot guys. He chuckled at me and said, “You are too much. haha”. After about 2 hours on the beach in the 90+ degree weather, we decided it was too hot and went to walk the boardwalk. Our first stop was Shriver’s Salt Water Taffy and Fudge. As we entered, Norman told me how his father used to take him there as a boy. He bought salt water taffy and I bought fudge.

After walking the boardwalk for about an hour and a half, we started to get hungry. While the funnel cakes sold on the Boardwalk made my mouth water, he insisted that we get something a little more substantial. I agreed. We went cruising for the best seafood shop around and since we were both tired, we wanted somewhere that wasn’t overly crowded as well. He settled on Spadafora’s seafood on the corner of 9th and Atlantic. We were pleasantly surprised.

After we ordered, we commented on how adorable our waitress was and he asked personal questions about her life. She was glad to tell him what her future plans were as I sat and watched them interact. After she took our order, Norman said, “Oh, she is just adorable.” I agreed. He then asked if we could dine family style since everything sounded so good to us both. I agreed again. The food was AMAZING! We both rolled out of there with full tummies.

Before we left, I picked up a magnet from Spadafora’s so that I could remember the day. It was the best time I had since I moved back to Philly six months prior. On the way home, I told Norman that I was still having trouble adjusting to Philly. He said something to the effect of “do what you have to do then move.” I could always count on Norman to be upfront and not mince words.

Norman was someone who got me and one of the few people whose advice I would listen to because I always knew he would be honest with me and smack me when I needed to be smacked. When I found out he had passed away, I was heartbroken. I never received a phone call or email as everyone just assumed that someone else told me then on my way to work one day, I picked up a copy of the Philadelphia Gay News and saw his photo. As I began to read it, I realized it was an obituary. My jaw dropped. After reading the obit, I started to cry. I don’t cry often and especially not in public. I just didn’t know what else to do.

I learned things that I never knew about Norman while reading it. For example, he was arrested at a 1992 protest in Harrisburg for pouring red dye into the Capitol fountain. Norman didn’t share much about his past with me because he preferred to focus on the present. He was a good man, a passionate advocate and a close friend.

To honor his memory, I wrote a short piece about him for phillygaycalendar.com and a friend agreed to write an obit for him in POZ magazine. The latter brought a smile to my face at a time when I was stricken with grief.

The road in life is full of many wonderful surprises. For me, Norman Baker was one of those surprises. I still think of him several times a week and smile as my eyes begin to water. While his death was tough for me to accept, I am glad that I had that one last day with him. When I think of Norman, I will think of our trip to Ocean City and how he always used to piss me off and make me smile at the same time. I saw a lot of myself in him and will remember him fondly. The world needs more Norman Bakers and I feel lucky to have met this one. He was an original and could never be replaced.
The POZ Obituary:

February 16, 2010

Philadelphia HIV, Mental Health Activist Norman Baker Dies

Norman Baker, a longtime HIV/AIDS activist who served as president of the Philadelphia AIDS Advocacy Coalition and volunteered with ActionAIDS and Philadelphia FIGHT, died at the Keystone Hospice House in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Gay Newsreports. He was 58.

In the 1990s, Baker helped review how well the Philadelphia school districts implemented condom-availability programs, and he participated in numerous ACT UP demonstrations to increase HIV/AIDS education and funding. In addition, as a member of the Philadelphia Mental Retardation Public-Awareness Committee and the Association for Retarded Citizens of Pennsylvania, he advocated for mental health issues and for disabled people’s human rights.

“Norman knew a lot about advocacy,” said Jane Shull, executive director of Philadelphia FIGHT. “He respected no boundaries and would just call anyone––he’d call the governor. And that attitude got people to talk to him, and he was able to really influence people.”
Treasure of music collectibles to be found in SF's Castro District <span class="xtraeff">Special</span>
By Jonathan Farrell.

Cabaret fans and nostalgia enthusiasts, take note: when looking for old recordings and rare one-of-a-kind finds look to All Music Services, the little treasure trove nestled in San Francisco's Castro District.

<span style="color: #333333; display: block;">This reporter got to spend an afternoon discovering hundreds of songs, LP album covers and other memorabilia merchandise stuff related to celebrities from times gone by. Owner Michael Mascioli offers rare and unique records. Many of these music finds are being converted or "re-mastered" onto CD. Being able to gather them is an effort, one that Mascioli knows very well. Back in 1991 he was co-owner of Medium Rare Records shop on Market Street. After five years, he gave up Medium Rare but his passion for music remained. "I love music and being around it is very rewarding to me," said Mascioli. The walls of his office are literally stacked from the floor to the ceiling with music recordings from just about every era. Some of the records and artists, like Pinky Waters and her "Let's Be Buddies" album would be completely unknown to today's generation who follow the latest singer on TV's "American Idol." "Some of these singers were barely known in their time," said Mascioli who not only does lots of research to find records to sell, but also to understand the story behind them. At this point with All Music Services, all his customers are by way of mailing list. "I send out a mailing list, an email catalog, of what I have in stock and customers respond," he said. When this reporter met with him at his office he was preparing a shipment to go out to a customer in Australia. Mascioli took some time away from his office on Prosper Street to chat and explain a bit more of what has become not only a business but a passion in life. "I am not a singer or a musician," he said. "But all my life I have just loved music and all things related to it." Mascioli is pleased to help people find music, especially the singers. "I think it is important for singers to know the music they sing and to as much about music itself," he said. Once he got the box ready that he needed for that shipment to Australia, he took a little stroll amid quaint side streets. Some of the houses are Victorian and Edwardian in style well over 100 years old. Many are painted in an array of bright colors, yes some in pink and purple, with a rainbow flag on display. He walked to Thorough Bread & Pastry cafe on Church Street - one of the spots he likes to have coffee, not far from his home-office. He cherished his moments out and about in the neighborhood. "Some times I get so busy, there are days I don't get outside before the day ends." As someone who lives in one of the most popular neighborhoods in San Francisco Mascioli feels fortunate to live in such a place. He does not overlook the fact that the Castro is a neighborhood and not just a visitor destination. "Real people really do live here," he said. He pointed out a few vacant store fronts were businesses have departed due to the economic recession. "That shop there was Saratoga Chocolates, they left after only a short time and that over there that was a nice little cafe to have coffee because it had a fireplace," said Mascioli. "I miss that place," he said. Even the cafe were he went to chat with this reporter at one time had been Just Desserts a local specialty bakery. "now it is Thorough Bread & Pastry," he said. Despite it's Mecca-like status that attracts thousands of tourists each year, The Castro is still vulnerable. "I worry when residents like myself are not able to patronize the local businesses as much as I like to; it really has an impact upon the neighborhood," he said. Regardless of day to day ups and downs, good economy or a recession, Mascioli is determined to stay, He relishes the wonderful business opportunity to collect and share music, especially vintage stuff. Local cabaret singer Bill Cooper often goes to Mascioli to find a recording. Cooper has performed in venues all over the San Francisco Bay Area as well as in New York City. His show; "You're Soaking in It" was a triumph at the Metropolitan Room three years ago, thanks in part through the help of Mascioli. "To be able help someone like Bill Cooper is part of the rewards of the job," said Mascioli. San Francisco may not be New York with the Broadway stage in its midst, yet despite its provincial aspects San Francisco still has some remnants of a night life. "There was a time when this city was dotted with places for live entertainment just about everywhere," said Randy Wallace, who also once owned a local record store - many years ago. Now in his 80's he is retired. Wallace has great affection for music, especially Jazz, the Great American Songbook and Big Bands Era. He is happy that Mascioli is making old music available to new audiences as it seems younger generations these days get most of their music from downloads off of the Internet. Wallace noted that at one time people could just go anywhere to enjoy music performed live by a band or orchestra; "and almost every bar in town had a piano with a singer," he said. Mascioli who has been in San Francisco since the 1970's became acquainted with all the places around town that had live performers and music. "Live music was always around, until rock and roll took over. Then things began to change," said Wallace. Wallace also noted that places like the Hungry I and the Purple Onion had once featured then-unknowns like Barbra Streisand and comedienne Phyllis Diller. Now superstars, they are among some of the great talents that got their start in San Francisco. "The 60's is when music changed and musicals and Broadway went info a decline," said Wallace. With top composers like George & Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Richard Rogers, "music then had more melody and lyrics were coherent," said Wallace. While Wallace might have less of an opinion of music today, Mascioli sees the talent in more contemporary music like The Beatles. While The Beatles are not Cole Porter, Irving Berlin or George and Ira Gershwin, "The Beatles were composers in their own right and much of their music holds up." It too is referred to as a classic," said Mascioli. Mascioli has lots of Beatles music on CD. "I think that is one of the neat things about technology today, so much of the really old music is available on disk and can be accessed by so many movies on video" said Mascioli. Mascioli noted how many orders he gets are for songs now on CD. "Not much call for stuff on vinyl these days. Yet I have it if people want it," he said. "Michael is wonderful. I am quite a collector," said dancer/choreographer Jack Moore. Like Wallace, Moore is from the generation that listened to music on 78's, 45's and 33 LP's, Moore now has CDs thanks to Mascioli. Moore noted that purchases arrive by mail well packaged and "he guarantees everything." "I am so surprised where Michael finds these things," said Moore. A transplant to San Francisco from New Jersey, Mascioli got engrossed in music while at Temple University. "I got into various shows and concerts for free as a writer for the school paper," he said. This is when his passion for music; all sorts of music began. "It sort of crept up on me, I would go to a show or a concert, write a story for the paper, but then discover an entirely unknown style or genre of music; at least to me at the time," said Mascioli. Each article took him from show to concert about town. He became enthralled with the music of Bette Midler, Manhattan Transfer and the Pointer Sisters long before they "hit the big time." Performers like these were introducing audiences of their time to music from the past, only re-packaged as it were. Midler's very first hit was "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B" a popular song from WWII, She won a Grammy Award for "Best New Singer of 1973." "Before attending those shows I was just into the music of my peers, like the Rolling Stones and the Beatles etc.," said Mascioli. Once settled in San Francisco, Mascioli made the rounds to all the night spots. He wrote critic reviews for the San Francisco Sentinel - back then in the 1970's a pioneering publication and the only officially gay newspaper in the City. "I would go to all the places like "The Venetian Room, The Purple Onion, The Plush Room at the York Hotel, etc.," said Mascioli. I would write up a review. "Today there are so few venues for local talent to perform," he said. "The Rrazz Room at Hotel Nikko is really the only prominent venue we have now for live entertainment," said Mascioli. Octavia Lounge on Market Street not far from the Castro had open mic on Sunday nights it closed. And, Enrico's in North Beach would feature singers on Friday's it just closed this year. Still there are efforts by local performers like Linda Kosut, Lua Hadar, Carol Luchenbach and Kathy Holly to name a few that manage to create a venue such as putting on a show at a restaurant or cafe - turning it into a performance space - even if only briefly. Mascioli hopes more live entertainment in San Francisco will make more of a resurgence despite the recession. He is happy to help singers find the songs on CD that they need.</span>

Memorial contributions can be made in Baker’s name to The ARC of Philadelphia, 2350 W. Westmoreland St., Philadelphia, PA 19140; Keystone Hospice House, 8765 Stenton Ave., Wyndmoor, PA 19038; or St. Cecilia Church, 99 N. Sixth Ave., Coatesville, PA 19320.
Jack Simmons Salta grew up on Long Island, the son of an Italian American father and mother of English descent who worked in the halcion days of T.V. and radio as a group singer, later as a private voice teacher and school teacher.
Bob Schoenberg, the Center's Director, was hired by Penn to be a two-day a week point person for lesbian/gay students when he began work on his doctoral dissertation in Fall 1982. He was only the second person specifically hired for such responsibilities on a college or university campus. Over the years, his position increased in scope and time commitment. By 1989, he was the full-time director of a program serving University students, faculty, and staff. A few years later, the program became a center and moved from Houston Hall to 3537 Locust Walk. During 2000-02, Bob helped raise funds to provide a new home for the LGBT Center and oversaw the renovation of the Carriage House, its location since June 2002. Bob has been a community activist, volunteering and serving on the boards of several LGBT and HIV/AIDS organizations. Currently, he is on the Board of Directors of the Council for Relationships and the Community Advisory Board of the Penn Center for AIDS Research. He also teaches "Foundations of Social Work Practice" to Penn MSW students. He edited the collection Homosexuality and Social Work// (Haworth Press) and, with his counterparts at Penn State and UCLA, authored //Our Place on Campus: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Services and Programs in Higher Education, published by Greenwood Press in June 2002.
