Jonathan R. Lax, a forceful advocate for stepped-up attention to AIDS research and drug treatment, died suddenly in his Center City house yesterday morning. Lax, 46, was a visionary who invented the now widely used surge protector strip for computers in 1980. He also founded and ran a Philadelphia-based marketing firm. Tim Harple, a friend, said that Lax collapsed at the bottom of his spiral staircase shortly after 5 a.m. and that paramedics were unable to revive him.
